The Beatles: a band that needs no introduction. So I’m going to jump right into it and get started with the site’s first Nigel Tufnel Top 10 List.
But first, ‘What is a Nigel Tufnel Top 10 List?’ I hear you say. Well it’s a concept devised by Eric Litwiller of the Grab A Stack Of Rock (then known as The Lebrain Train) community. It’s a top ten list- except it goes to 11. Quite simple, really.
As for the topic of this post, well that’s also simple. With so many great songs, no one’s top 11 Beatles songs will be the same as another person’s.
So without further ado, and in no particular order, let’s get right to it.
My Top 11 Beatles Songs
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
For a long time this was my favourite. It’s got this alluring haunting feeling to it.
Day Tripper
Hell of a riff.
Across The Universe
A brilliant ballad. The gentle tenderness of the song is always welcome in my ears.
I Am The Walrus
One of the more bonkers numbers in the discography, “I Am The Walrus” makes for both a fun and funny listen. I particularly like the early ELO feel that the strings give it. Jeff Lynne was heavily inspired by the Beatles after all. The Oingo Boingo cover is also great too.
Twist and Shout
One of my top three Beatles songs, I love how John Lennon is just completely going for it vocally. You don’t get this sort of singing much these days, where a singer sings so raw. The simple call and response of the chorus is also great fun and incredibly infectious.
A Hard Day’s Night
My first ‘favourite Beatles song’, the music video I saw for this one (apparently the movie’s trailer) is a blast.
Do You Want To Know A Secret
Short and sweet, I just enjoy bopping along to the strumming, ‘ooh-ooh-oohs’ and ‘do-da-dos’.
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
What can I say, it’s insanely catchy. No Doubt did a fun amped-up cover version too.
Octopus’s Garden
A fun mellow number, it’s simple and catchy and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Back In The USSR
Lyrical content notwithstanding, this one rocks. The bit that’s stylistically reminiscent of The Beach Boys is also neat to hear.
Drive My Car
And to finish it off, what is probably my number one song of theirs. This fun (and sometimes funny) tune combines a bouncy vocal melody throughout and an underpinning piano line that just really hits the spot.
So that’s it. The 11 songs from the fab four that I call my favourite. But what are some of yours? Have I missed any you think are worth mentioning? Let me know down below and, until the next time, don’t bother me (that’s not me being rude, that’s a Beatles song reference 🙂 )
