Pretty much what it says on the tin. Let’s go over some of my favourite covers of Rolling Stones songs. Why then am I using the alternate Hackney Diamonds cover art for this post? Well because I shot it and damnit, I needed to use it somewhere.

That aside, let’s get right into it. The only restriction is one cover per band, otherwise you’d be sick of hearing Chris Farlowe’s name by the end of this. These are in no particular order as it doesn’t really make any sense to attempt to rank them.

The Skyhooks – Brown Sugar

I don’t think I’ve heard that intro riff sound better anywhere else, and I enjoy Shirley Strachan’s signature vocal style on the song too. The audience participation part is also fun, which is not always the case when bands stop a song to make the audience sing.

Glenn Tipton – Paint It Black

A divisive one to be sure, I personally love it. Glenn’s ‘singing’ isn’t exactly the most tuneful, but he brings an aggression to the whole song with the playing that suits it.

Johnny Winter – Jumpin’ Jack Flash

This is admittedly more to do with the guitarwork than the singing, but it’s great guitarwork.

Bon Jovi – It’s Only Rock And Roll

Both Jon and Richie sound great on their respective parts, and I always love a horn section.

Chris Farlowe – Out Of Time

Chris Farlowe has done a few Rolling Stones covers, but this is my favourite of them (though it is odd to call it a cover seeing as Jagger allegedly wrote it with Farlowe’s voice in mind).

Jimmy & The Boys – Get Off My Cloud

Jimmy and the Boys were an Australian shock-rock new wave band, and this cover is as out-there as that description suggests. Naturally, their version of the song is completely different, but I love it and I’m glad we have two unique versions of the tune to enjoy.

Bette Midler – Beast Of Burden

Almost goes without saying. Bette brings a fantastic energy to the song.

Jose Feliciano – Start Me Up

I’ve always loved listening to Feliciano sing, and this song is no exception. His voice soars with the song.

W.A.S.P. – Paint It Black

My favourite of all the “Paint It Black” covers, Blackie Lawless sounds amazing here. This whole rendition is just epic.

Stars on 45 – The Greatest Rock And Roll Band In The World

Technically a bunch of very short covers, I still consider it eligible. I love stars on 45, and this is one of my favourites. 15 minutes of a Rolling Stones medley is hard to beat. Their Mick Jagger impersonator is pretty good, and I love how they even managed to fit “Star Star” in there too.

So that’s all from me, but what’s your favourite cover of a Rolling Stones song? Let me know down below if I’ve missed any good ones.

  1. You missed both the Residents and Devo’s Satisfaction covers.

    1. Oh I’m well aware of Devo’s cover, I just don’t like it. The Residents’ was new to me. I can’t say I’m possessed with the urge to listen to that one again either, I’m afraid.

  2. Great list, Harrison. I’m a big fan of Chris Farlowe, so was glad to see him get a mention. Fun fact about Bette Midler’s version of “Beast Burden”: due to its ubiquitousness on MTV in the’80’s I’m pretty sure I heard it before the original. My addition: Otis Redding’s cover of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Henry.

    1. Thanks Henry. I’m always happy to give Farlowe some kudos, and I enjoyed Otis’s version of Satisfaction too.
